Well, I think you can be grateful to your friends and for your friends, but they mean different things and with "for" it carries more context. Maybe you are omitting some words, so maybe that's why it's technically wrong? Anyway, you are grateful to your friends by being grateful towards them, you literally express to them how thankful you are when they do something for you. Being grateful for my friends would mean that I'm grateful for having the friends that I have, they are such good friends that I fell blessed by having them. I'm not grateful just by the fact that I have friends, I'm grateful by the fact that I have these specific great friends. I'm grateful for my friends.
