Jared Polin

am working my way though using the @canonusa R5 Mark II (R5 from here on out) in the Real World. I’ve shot Baseball a few times during the day, but not a night game just yet where I push the ISO. I shot some MLS soccer, and yesterday I shot field hockey.

There’s so much to play with in this camera. And yes, most of what I’ve been shooting has been action sports, but Stephen has also used it to photograph portraits of his 1 year old. Canon has never had a more versatile camera in my opinion than the R5. I don’t think the industry has really seen a camera like this. Yes, the Sony a7R V is a fantastic camera, with a beautiful sensor, but it’s slow in terms of shooting speed. And yes, I get it, it’s not all about shooting speed and auto focus…but why can’t you have it all…and it seems as if the R5 as of now, has it all.

No Camera is Perfect, the R5 isn’t perfect, there’s always quirks and compromises made, but so far, it’s solid. For example, the R5’s auto focus is superior to that of the R3 which held the crown for best auto focus in the industry…until now. The R5 shoots at 30 FPS just like the R3, but offers Pre-Shooting. Remember, the R5 is almost double the resolution and can shoot at the same speed. That’s kind of insane. The un-known right now for me is High ISO, R5 vs R3, which I should test at a Phillies Night Game. Same lens, same settings, different cameras.

In terms of the body, I still prefer a Pro body with built in grip, over a non pro body of the R5, even when you add a grip. But all and all, there’s nothing in the industry that touches it right now. You can say Z8/Z9 all you want…but there’s no question in my mind, the R5 is a hell of a lot more well rounded and feature packed.

Field Hockey photos taken at 1/4000th of a Second at F2.8 at the correct ISO with a 400 2.8 IS III adapted with an EF to RF adapter. (ISO’s ranged from 250-500 on an overcast day)

3429 RAW Files = 177 Gigs (Thanks Pre-Shooting)

These are beautiful images Jared! I love it

Cool camera; however, my dream camera is the z9. Sticking with the d850 and zf for now

Those shots look great man. Interesting you like the built in grip better. I find that being able to remove the grip allows me to pack better for traveling and reattaching is simple enough that it is a non thought these days.

@SliverCreations

Awesome stuff. I am testing mine with the EF 400mm 2.8 II tomorrow shooting birds.

@soundanswer

Those are crispy AF, pun intended. I’m noticing alternating light and dark horizontal bands (especially in BG) in these shots. I haven’t had a problem with that sort of banding with my R5II, but I’m not pushing the electronic shutter that fast. Freaking love this camera though I tell ya. Ps looks like skittles in action.

@benoittissier58

Would like to see it tested with "affordable" lenses (200-800, 100-400)

@MadRabbit92

Watchong these photos makes me want to get back to playing field hockey. Such an amazing sport.

Pity the lenses are so expensive. The affordable ones are slow. Might be the best camera but for regular people and weekend photographers the glass is too much.

@andrescastillo4971

What about the sony A1? I have both and seems comparable. But canon colors are more accurate and the r5 mk II have way better ibis for video

I use a sabrant 1 TB CF Express b card. Works wonders for the wallet

@gregoryspring1303

What is the difference in image quality between R5 II AND R1? 45 vs 24 meg.

@mikafoxx2717

That's a lot of gigs you could let by shooting jpeg. ;P Although for real, do we need 45 megapixels for fast action? Canon seems to think not.

@oopppppp

Do you think the Sony a7r5 produces a cleaner image?

@olivememer

Canon supremacy 💪

I was using Z8 for a year and now I switched to R5II. It's day and night in terms of AF. Finally I don't have to check photos anymore if it's in focus or the camera missed again

@thomastuorto9929

Great to hear about the AF. Wildlife shooter here. What are you considering high ISO? I’m always looking for the lowest iso possible but hoping a new camera would be great at 3200 & workable at 6400-8000 iso max.

@christopherdriscoll1697

3500 photos on a few hours shooting!!! Forget the storage size. They better bring ai into the camera to cull the keepers. That'd be the fastest past to burnout for me.

@andrew9654

Nice. So I should definitely pick this up vs a used R3?? I shoot birds and sports. Coming from a 5Dmk4 so either will be a huge upgrade. Edit - my main concern is rolling shutter

The R5 is not going to have the same ISO sensitivity as a 3, because it has smaller, denser pixels with similar photo chemistry as the R3. They may (or may not) have made some improvements with regard to manufacturing and purity of the semi-c minerals but, if they had upgraded the sensor physics entirely they would have said that very loudly. They do seem to think their recent consumer tests with improved NN RAW extraction algorithms are going to benefit the 1. Some of that benefit may translate into better low light interpretation, but I've never seen that overcome basic physics. Lower light = lower data. The auto-focus in your hands now uses algorithms that are derivative of the R3, but are channelled through vector-based algebra. Hence, they may at times even be faster than the R3 despite the pixels. I'm guessing the 5ii has scale limitations that are comparable to the R3. With regard to full frame interpretation, however, we've already seen some independent testing which confirms what you're now able to report with this R5 ii: that the AF outclasses the competition. When the R1 comes out you'll have this same technology under faster throughput. My guess is that we're going to experience that as a sensation of being snappier with more image choices. If we look closer under the "1" I think we'll also notice we're not operating under the same scale limitations as the R3. The fact that they only increased the 1's top fps by about 1/3 was a big hint in this regard. That little-bitty 40fps, has me salivating.

@JonasSecond-fz8bh

Since you switched to Canon it more and more feels like you trying to defend Canon or say it is superior even if sometimes it matches the competition. The R5 MkII is a fantastic camera, don't get me wrong, but I would love if you stayed as objective as possible during the review.
