One of the reasons that the Airplane's first few albums sounded so good (aside from their great musicianship and vocals) was their fortuitous signing with RCA. At that time, they were the vanguards of state of the art sound engineering. Those early records, you almost feel like you are in the room with them.

I remember when Takes Off was in the record store (yes, we went to a real record store back then) and my oldest brother said he’d heard one of the cuts and liked it. Done. I bought it and played the hell out of it. I did not know that about RCA and their recording studio. At that time, apparently, Grace had been approached by The Blues Project to join them. Around October Signe left, Jack Casady asked Grace to join the Airplane. Such seemingly random acts and how history is made.

This band formed within the tension between hip San Francisco and the exponential growth and influence from Palo Alto the center of the silicon technological explosion and Stanford U.. Humanities and social sciences at Berkeley were already freaking out over the defense industrial complex, nuclear weapons and no control over technological growth . Hence , Berkeley vs Stanford over cultural influence and grants ? Science nerds vs hippies ?

Cool photo… But you should’ve found one with Signy Anderson in it instead – she was in the band when they first got signed

I did know that and invite anyone who’s interested to come out to the Haight Street Art Center this Saturday for a show dedicated to the 60 year opening of The Matrix and the formation of JA by Marty.
