Not as good as The Spider's Web, but not a complete travesty as often portrayed. Both the Spider and the Gargoyle give exaggerated "silent picture" recoiling takes, but so do both Captain Marvel and the Scorpion in a more highly regarded serial. My biggest reservation is that the entire police force now knows that Wentworth is Blinky McQuade. How could something every single cop in the city is familiar with not leak out to the underworld? How could Wentworth hope to tamp down the police commissioner's suspicion that he's the Spider if he makes no attempt to hide the fact he has another secret identity? But even so, if you think The Spider's Web is terrific, you will probably enjoy The Spider Returns, too, even if the grim action is interspersed with more two-reel-comedy silliness than you will probably think necessary.
