V101 SPACE

I re-watched Interstellar last night and discovered something awesome… yet terrifying.

After a long day of planning what my next V101 SPACE video might be about, I sat down to unwind and ended up catching Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, one of my all-time favourites. I’ve seen it several times since its release in 2014, but this time, I noticed something new.

During the water-world scene, there’s a subtle yet brilliant ticking sound that plays the entire time the crew are on the planet. I’d always assumed it was simply a clever reminder that time is slipping away, since every hour down there equals seven years back on Earth, but it’s more than that.

Each tick happens every 1.25 seconds, and with a little research, I found that every single tick equals one full day passing on Earth. That means, as the crew scramble through rising tides, each heartbeat-like sound marks another day lost to relativity, a perfect, terrifying detail in one of cinema’s most intense sequences.

If you haven’t seen it in a while, it’s worth revisiting. A breathtaking story about wormholes, black holes, and the limits of human love. Interstellar only gets better with time! - Rob
