The country is completely broken under this Government! 😞

Imagine the quality of work you get from an unpaid criminal 😂

Have they not seen what is happening over the pond?! Groups of people just casually walking into stores and cleaning them out because there are no repercussions or consequences. That'll happen here in no time.

No deterrent at all they’ll just keep re offending

Prison turns petty criminals into hardened felons, community service cleaning graveyards is a much better option.

Government doesn’t want to pay a real living wage but instead wants free labour from criminals. This happens in the US. Will make no difference. If prisons really are at full capacity. Bring back the death penalty!

And they have the cheek to talk about the country being secure under them!

Prisons are overflowing and at breaking point. That's why this is happening

It would be wrong if jails actually reformed people, but most people who go to prison end up in deeper trouble than when they went in. There are more drug addicts in prison than anywhere else.

I don't necessarily think small crimes need long jail time, but if there's work that needs doing you should pay a fair wage to people actually looking for work, not take unpaid work from people who don't want to do it

Burglars, thieves and drug dealers should not be getting “less than 12 month sentences” - should be a minimum of 2 years. Crime is astronomically high precisely because these pathetic sentences are no deterrent.

Nobody at HSBC went to jail when they got caught laundering billions of dollars for Mexican drug cartels ... They got a fine which was less than 20% of what they made from organised crime money laundering . So, if a burglar steals 10 grand ,the burglar should get fined under 2 grand . ONE LAW FOR EVERYONE ... Or , JAIL THE WHOLE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT HSBC FOR 30 YEARS EACH . and give the burglar 12 months .

Petty crime? Like shoplifting or drug possession then sure I'd agree. But Burglars? Drug dealers? Those people aren't turning up to community service. No chance. They should recieve harsher sentences and better prison treatment. The goal of prisons should be to teach and reform. But criminals need to be put into prison for longer periods to make them realise crime does not pay. The government just wants free labour.

This will see a rise in these crimes because the punishment is so weak. Well done, tories. Absolutely USELESS.

But the politicians will wet themselves at the idea of vigilantism.

Although I can understand where most people are coming from, community service actually has a lower recidivism rate than short term (under 12 month) prison sentences, so it’s likely to be positive in the long run as well as helping with overcrowding and lack of funding issues within prisons.

Good Morning Britain
Under a new government plan, those facing jail terms of under 12 months - such as burglars, thieves, and drug dealers - will not face jail but instead be 'punished' in the community through unpaid work.
Is it right that these criminals dodge jail?
