If you asked me what phrases a partner should avoid saying in labor, the phrase "Are you tired?" would be on the top of my list. It seems like something that a caring person would ask, but stop and consider this question for a minute. When you are in labor your answer to this question will always be YES! And asking a question like this usually will call attention to the fact that you are tired. As a doula, I recommend NOT ASKING THIS QUESTION. Instead, just assume that the answer is YES and move forward with support accordingly. Knowing what to say and what to avoid in labor can be tricky! It is one of the key skills that we teach in the SupportingHer course for partners. (birthtoolbox.com/online-dads-class/) and it's the topic of a helpful video that I released with more examples here https://youtu.be/b1k3qh0jz-o.
