Understanding Narcissism, by Elizabeth Shaw.

Better to Have Loved and Lost Than to Stay with a Narcissist
There’s an old saying: “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” When it comes to narcissistic psychopaths, this adage takes on an even deeper meaning. Staying in a relationship with a narcissist can be emotionally, mentally, and sometimes physically draining. The love they offer is often conditional, manipulative, and intertwined with control, guilt, and gaslighting.
A narcissist thrives on power and dominance. Your needs, feelings, and boundaries are secondary to their desire for admiration and validation. Over time, living under this constant strain erodes self-esteem, creates anxiety, and can leave you questioning your own reality. The highs—the charm, attention, and affection—come at the cost of your emotional stability, while the lows—criticism, devaluation, and manipulation—leave long-lasting scars.
Walking away, painful as it may feel, is a courageous act of self-preservation. Choosing freedom over toxicity allows you to heal, reclaim your identity, and eventually open yourself to relationships that are nurturing and reciprocal.
You deserve love that uplifts, not one that diminishes. Understanding the patterns of narcissistic behaviour is essential to protect yourself.
