In Daraya, on the outskirts of Damascus, a group of young Syrian artists have turned the ruins of a war-torn house into a canvas honouring families lost to Syria’s civil war.

The project was led by Bilal Shoraba, an activist and graffiti artist who created around 30 murals as quiet acts of defiance during the regime's siege of the town between 2012 and 2016.

After returning to Daraya, Shoraba launched a workshop with the Dar Ebla Cultural Center to teach local youth the art of graffiti.

The Assad regime was ousted in December last year, ending nearly 14 years of civil war that killed about half a million people, displaced millions, and left tens of thousands missing.
