HEISENBERG'S MATRIX MECHANICS

Einstein: What you have told us sounds extremely strange. You assume the existence of electrons inside the atom, ... but you refuse to consider their orbits.

Heisenberg: We cannot observe electron orbits inside the atom.

Einstein: You don't seriously believe that none but observable magnitudes must go into a physical theory?

Heisenberg: Isn't that precisely what you have done with relativity?

Einstein: Possibly I did use this kind of reasoning but it is nonsense all the same.

This is a shortened version of a conversation Heisenberg recounted having with Einstein in his book "Physics and Beyond". In my next video (should be done in the next week or two), you will learn how Heisenberg discovered Quantum Mechanics and why he "refused" to consider electron orbits.

Hope you are having a good week!

Best,
Dan
