Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places

Quick quiz! Here’s an old-time photograph of some miners underground in Johannesburg, South Africa. What are the two angled support timbers usually called that you see in the photograph?

A) Stills
B) Stulls
C) Stalls
D) Stells

I was trying to figure out what the round, white thing was on the ground next to the kneeling miner on the right-hand side of the photograph. Any guesses? Leave a comment. I’m not sure when this photograph was taken, but I’d guess sometime between 1890 and 1910.

By the way, the answer to the quiz question is choice B. They are stulls. I’m not sure if that term was used in South African mines, though.
