Little Joel

Hey! I just privated two videos I made about a meme about art. To be clear, I wasn't being cake-cancelled or whatever, like it was fine. I just realized that my own thoughts on the meme were way more complicated and personal than I was letting on. I think my bonus patreon video will be about those videos, this month, because my own reaction and people's comments gave me a lot to think about. Thank you for your comments, including the negative ones, they were helpful!

I was only halfway done with the second one and was gonna finish it. I’ll never sleep on a little Joel video again

Who knew a cake meme could be so complicated

I was going to show that vid to my boyfriend when I got home from work, and now it's gone... Tiny Joe, you've taught me a real lesson today about how life's pleasures are fleeting. I will hold my loved ones close today. Edit update: That man is now my fiance. Thank you for teaching me to cherish him, a lesson that I will carry with me until I meet him again on the other side of eternity.

It's a super interesting conversation to me, actually. I'd like to another follow up with all the new nuance.

I can't wait for Big Joel to make an analysis video about your channel and the politics & philosophies of cake art criticism.

I love how in the weeds Little Joel gets about memes.

I agree with your perspective on it in theory and in regards to making art as a career, but I also think that for artists just beginning, comparing yourself to more superior artists is literally the killer of creativity. Like there's nothing wrong with you comparing to peers and people who are on your level (or striving for someone's style/whatever) but the cake meme is more for people who are beginners comparing themselves to saints. In the broad context, not a great meme, but as inspiration for smaller creators, very resonant.

@ruleofthree99

someone said this in the original comments but the fact that the original post was at least heavily implied to be about fanart and fanfiction is actually very key to its tone imo

I think that what both sides of the argument forgot to mention is that just because an artist thought their artwork was worthless when compared to another artwork, at the end is the public who decides what's good or not. Honestly when it comes to literal cakes I prefer simplicity and safe choices, I'm not a dessert connoisseur and most people aren't either. When it comes to non cake examples, Little Joel has become quite popular despite being a very stream of consciousness silly little outlet for your ideas, but the end result is very engaging, it sparks conversation and discussion and I can see why you could compare it with Big Joel and think is not on the same league but we love it, your fans love it, wven if you think the recipes aren't as complex as your Big Joel fancy cakes.

@sky-chau

I feel like the important context here is that the two cakes meme is about fanfiction and repetition of tropes.

Even though we didn't see eye to eye about the cake meme, I like your content and always appreciate your thoughts!

I left a similar comment on the second vid but if anyone is interested in further exploring this topic I recommend CJ the X, their videos about Objectively Bad Art and the 7 Sins of Art are great arguments for having some standard by which you can say something is good or bad and for still creating because denying the world your unique gifts is selfish, respectively

i liked your videos because i feel very much like you about art, i care less about what an audience thinks (individually? as a group, averaged? mean, median or mode?) than i do about what i personally think. not only because its almost impossible to KNOW what an audience thinks but also because i am an artist because i feel that my art criticism and taste in art is good. i see you, little joel

My problem with Joel’s interpretation is that It assumes that there is one objective measurement about what will make art “good” to an audience. But the meme uses cake. The baker is clearly judging their cake, like Joel is, by the aesthetic of the cake. But that’s not the only way to judge a cake as “good” or to find value in a cake, as can be seen by the audience presumably being excited by the concept of eating the cakes . Likewise, an artist can hyper fixate on aspects of their art even when the audience isn’t guaranteed to value the art for the same reason. An artist might be dissatisfied by their works’ poses not being dynamic or interesting enough, when the audience doesn’t care about that aspect that much and is more interested in how the coloring is done. An artist might not think their lyrics are very good but the audience doesn’t care because it’s actually the vocals that they care about, not the actual words. A writer might be insecure about the plot of their story being simple and predictable. But the audience doesn’t care because the aspect they value is the characters. There is no reason to assume that the audience will value aspects the same as you, or even as each other. Heck, aspects you might find flaws may be aspects that people like. Those trite, childish lyrics might be what the audience that likes the song resonates with. It’s also very unhelpful to compare yourselfccc to others in the way that the artist in the first panel does. It doesn’t typically result in better art. Usually you just get insecurity and unfinished projects, as nothing is good enough.

@el5522

A problem I had is that... it does sort of take the meme out of its original context. And I get it, that's what happens with a meme, but it's not meant to be a statement on art as a whole. It's about a specific section of fandom culture (fanfiction writers) and it's meant to be encouraging. And in the context of fanfiction, someone looking for certain tropes of certain characters generally WILL be excited to just have more of their favorite trope. Like I just think maybe consider it in the context of fandom culture, where everything is freely made, shared with others as a labor of shared love for the media. And it's not even necessarily about getting better (tho many people do), it's about allowing yourself to participate in the gifting aspect of fandom culture as a writer no matter your skill level, or even if you see that someone else has done your exact trope but better. It's still worth being written and there will be people who find and enjoy it.

I appreciate how off the cuff the channel remains. It's like the floppy, less aesthetically pleasing cake between the multiple Joels that also happens to be ice cream cake with caramel filling.

I’m assuming the guy who went “woah two cakes!” then realized one cake had a drop of vanilla on top and proceeded to throw it out, which personally offended Little Joel, who then forced his artisan Oompa Loompas to quickly upload a new video, and then a response video, before taking both down amidst the cake controversy

I feel like I've come to know the most about Little Joel as a person through his various controversial cake-related discussion videos.
