Should cops get free food, or should they pay like everyone else?

I used to work at Domino's Pizza in the late '80s. If officers came in in uniform we would give them free pizza. We did that so that there was a frequent police presence at the store and would act as a deterrent for potential burglars. It was always well known that drivers carry less than $20 change but that the money was brought back to the store. If the officers were off duty in plain clothes they got half price pizza as a token of our gratitude for them being police officers. We felt that they were doing us a service as a deterrent from criminals if we gave them free pizza. It was a win-win situation. It really had nothing to do with them risking their lives.

I worked as a paramedic for over a decade, never asked for a discount or free food! But, in uniform, on duty, sometimes was blessed with a discount, offered by the establishment. Doing your job entitles you to a paycheck, nothing else.

Its between the cop and the business owner. Its not really anyone elses business.

I am retired law enforcement. Always paid even when the owners tried to give it for free.

That should be left to the business owner to decide.

I risk my life everyday as an electrician serving the community and supporting the local economy. That’s being said, I should have to pay for my food.

They should pay unless the restaurant just gives it to them

My father said that his department weren't allowed to get free food or coffee. But some restaurants offered police a discount. This was decades ago, so I'm not sure what's going on today.

To me it’s a sign of respect. When I worked in food industry, I always gave officers there bagel and or coffee at no charge. Just felt like the right thing to do. Knowing at any time someone in my family might need there help.

I get free food, but because people pay. I usually tell the waitress not to let people do it, but they still do.

It depends on the private business Some private businesses like to give cops free food because it brings them in the business, less chances of them getting robbed when cops are always coming in But they shouldn't demand it or expect it I'm okay with people offering it

That's strictly up to the individual business owner. Also department policy state that it is prohibited. It shouldn't be a defacto thing. Cops do get paid, they can pack a lunch like everybody else.

I worked at several different restaurants for the same company. Depending on which manager was on duty. Sometimes they would pay full price.Sometimes a discount and sometimes free food. But the officers understood, it wasn't guaranteed, and it depended on the manager at the particular time. When I was managing, I liked having police officers in my restaurant. It makes it less likely that I will get robbed.

That all depends on the business itself. If a restaurant owner or Cafe owner wants to give officers free food that's their prerogative. It shouldn't concern anybody else.

Free food, no. Free coffee yes

Some companies will literally give them food, but there is no reason to feel entitled to it. They risk their lives yes, but it was their decision to join the PD.

Accepting ANYTHING free of charge is a BRIBE. Dad was a cop. Youngest brother is a chief of police. Speaking from experience.

I've baked cookies and things for our local police department in appreciation for going above and beyond for me and my family. I know that's their job but I do that for lots of people.❤

They already get retirement and pension and discounts at stores. I have no retirement or pension, so they can pay up. They work for us, not us for them.
