What are your thoughts on swearing in videos?

I'm not talking about dropping the f-bomb for the sake of being polarising.

But for the reason of being more natural and authentic in the way you communicate.

For example, if you get to know me and we become friends, then the degree to which I swear goes up dramatically 😅.

During my journey to become more authentic in videos, I find myself wondering if this is something we should start doing more?

Now, I was in hospitality for 15 years and developed a professional persona that is hard to let go of.

Add that to an American audience that don't (normally) swear as much as us brits, and YouTube being funny with swearing in general, it's something I avoided.

However, YouTube has recently relaxed a bit on swearing, so long as it's not in the first 30 seconds and moderate in use.

And I've seen many creators swear more and grow just fine.

So the question is, how do you feel about swearing in videos? Would it put you off?

Do you swear in your videos? Or would you like to?

In my personal life, I can swear like a sailor! I don't mind hearing some swear words in videos as long as it's not excessive and supports the emotion of the moment. In my own videos, I don't swear. One reason is if I'm the teacher and I'm swearing, then I'm frustrated, and that's not the feeling I want to impart! 😁 I want to make what I'm teaching seem easy to the viewer. The other reason is that YouTube makes us rate our videos as suitable for ads, and we have to say if there is profanity in them. I wouldn't want to risk the ad revenue over a couple of swear words

I generally swear a couple times in my videos these days. I used to avoid it, but the longer I do this, the more I've realized my audience doesn't really care if I swear. Now, if one naturally pops out while I am talking, I just leave it.

I personally dont like swearing and wouldn't want to hear it. I wouldn't subscribe either, if a channel used those words.

I think natural swearing similar to how one would talk with an in-person friend is fine, at least for me. However I am sensitive to those with families and young children, or with religious convictions about swearing. My kids are grown now, but when they were around I wouldn’t listen to any videos with swearing. It also depends if the swearing is “light” or includes “taking God’s name in vain” (meaning using the names of God as a swear word). Authenticity is attractive though, and so I think individual creators have to make a personal decision. Interesting to think about.
