I cut a tomato to find that the seeds inside had started sprouting.

Hi I'm a farmer and tomato seeds sprouting inside does happen but it looks a bit different. What you are seeing in your tomato is just normal veining and coloration of tomato. Hope that helps. :)

I looked it up. Apparently its a phenomenon called "vivipary" in which seeds sprout while still inside an over ripe fruit. It's safe to eat so long as the fruit itself is not rotting, but they say it could compromise the texture of the food. Did it seem a liittle squishy in those parts? Edit: If you haven't already you should definitely look it up for some wild pictures!

Sprouting or just still green? The veining just looks like the “umbilical cord” the plant has for the seeds. And the green could just be leftover chlorophyll?

Something tells me that's good luck

My sister planted one like that a couple years ago, it still produces fruit; she calls it Lazarus.

I had a stretch of time where all my bell peppers had baby peppers inside them!

That happened to me too! Mine were a 3pk from Kroger. I was letting them ripen on the counter, by the time I looked at them again they had pimples. When I cut it open they had long sprouts going all through them. I was grossed out didn't buy tomatoes for months. Google told me calm down lady, it's not alien larvae.🤣 Now I just buy single roma tomatoes I hope for the best. 🤷🏾

Lol I never fail to find it creepy and alien looking when I chop into a sprouting tomato. Of course I think this one still has a ways to go

Yea I saw that the seeds were sprouting through the skin on a tomato I had on the counter. It took me sometime to look up something confirming that this was a natural occurrence.

Yes, yes I’ve been wondering about that! I’ve been getting a lot of these! But mostly when I buy tomatoes in a bag.

I had some vivipary tomatoes not to long ago. I planted them and they were doing well until squirrels dug them up and knocked them over. Sigh. They did later plant a viable peanut for me.

@Miranda_andariM

So, gonna plant it? Different kind of kitchen experiment? My guess is they're heirloom of some sort?
