No one person or party owns the United States. Those of us who choose to celebrate the 4th, do so with the knowledge that we are celebrating something much bigger than this moment.

Celebrating the 4th of July has always been aspirational. For Black and Indigenous Americans, particularly, this country has never lived up to its ideals. Our forefathers knew that better than most.

But understand that if you see a Black or Indigenous person choosing to celebrate this nation’s birth, we are celebrating the promise of what it could be. We’re choosing to focus on the determination, the resilience and the indomitable spirit of American citizens who continue to insist that this nation live up to its ideals.

WE are as much a part of this nation’s identity as anyone. And we will not allow anyone to take that away from us.
