Chasing Andrew Jackson

Back in 1980, the average trucker pulled in around $39,000 a year—that’s the same as $147,000 in today’s dollars. Fast forward to now, and most drivers are making barely half that, averaging $72,000. In just five decades, the pay has been gutted while the workload hasn’t changed. The industry has squeezed wages, stripped away respect, and left drivers carrying the same burden for far less. If that’s not proof the system is broken, I don’t know what is.

@supertruckertom

How many Unionized trucking companies are left compared to 1980? Deregulation forever changed the industry and forced rates charged to customers and pay scales lower.

@DAViDD767

Yes sir, you are correct, and trucking is not middle class anymore, it is now considered the working class with the likes of people working at Mickey D's.

That's only half the issue. The other reason is the US dollar has lost most of its value.

So true. And it's NOT gonna get better no time soon unless the drivers just walk off the jobs and call for a MAJOR shutdown nationwide, and things will change a full 360°

@kshuburner

well said. proving inflation is a crime. because the issuers of the money are not even backing currency by gold. and their currency value has not declined at same rate as the wages. your salary cut in half. but dollar not half as valuable as it was few decades ago.

The system is sending the money to the people that don't work. Welcome to greed and usury.

@gwalker1652

If your numbers are correct- the system is not broken. It is operating exactly as designed. Capitalism generates wealth to the people at the top usually business owners the more overhead/cost they can squeeze out of their business model the more wealth they get to keep. Transportation/truckers/owner operators are an expense and owners will continually look for ways to lower that expense. What you see now foreign drivers, the push for self driving trucks, and stagnant rates due to low barrier of entry and thus excess capacity is the system at work.

That’s why the loads get hijacked. $100,000 in one night is probably a rush for those guys.
