CoD’s prestige system laid the groundwork for modern gaming. Copious amounts of grind, dopamine inducing sounds and popups, and nearly an infinite well of “content” to come back to the game for.

This struck me as very odd when I introduced a friend to a game called Squad, they didn’t understand why they would play if there’s nothing to unlock and all the weapons are available from the start, as with any industry ruled by investors the race to hack peoples brains has led to a world where people think destiny 2 is a good use of their time and don’t even notice the poison in their wine

Interesting question - my friends still play those stuff. I mostly enjoy my singleplayer games though and there I have much fun!

I still enjoy my single player games too. Just finished the Dishonored series and the Metro series too. Now all developers want to be the next game as a service go-to.

Sense of continued progression was one of the things that got me into "MMOs" early on, comparing to FPS games. Nowdays it's whole different level, designed to make people stick around and spend money.

I don't usually care much about unlocks and cosmetics so I just play to have fun still, but I grew up on more old school games so I've always done that.

None of this in simracing, since there's nothing to grind for, to unlock or to accomplish. You buy the cars and tracks you like for real money, race real people - done. Having gamed for 25 years, simracing is a relief. iRacing, rFactor2, Assetto Corsa Competizione, RaceRoom.

Listen man, I'm just glad you're back. But yeah, it's either that for multiplayer games, or wanting you to sit through way too much cinematics and passive content in single player games. It's much harder to find games that I can actually enjoy and respect.

BNS we need you!!! CS2 is a travesty! Between the huge frame spikes and new "tickless" updating, someone needs to come in and clear things up for the rest of us because everyone is just speculating and nobody knows what they're talking about. HALP!!!

People just don't seem to have the patience to play and improve for it's own sake. I feel similar about SBMM to unlocks, cosmetics and such; we learnt to be good quickly on an even playing field because good players were about to school us, and it seems most new gamers aren't down for getting their arses kicked until they improve.

shareholders, big corporations buying out popular IPs and locking them behind license fees and legal binds, and greed. Also, don't forget the common denominator of consumer is at an all time low.

100% agree. So many complaints regarding Halo Infinite are "there's nothing to do when you finish the battle pass" or "I don't unlock stuff fast enough"... Funny because in Halo 1 there was no unlocks at all, yet people still play it to this day on the original Xbox. I'm pretty sure many modern "gamers" don't actually like games, they're just looking for a skinner box to pass the time. If it wasn't video games it would be meth.

Use to be working for something in game like you could back in the day for games like MW2, BO1, MW3, Battlefields, Smash Bros, etc. Now it's just cough up the extra 20-XXXX dollars to get all the skins and unlocks u want.

This is the worst era of gaming, souless, microtransactions, bad politics and low creativity devs

been playing old games lately, nice and simple, no BS just good old fun like when I was a wee lad

Also unlockables are DLC now and thats because we dont have that much time to play anymore.. so we'd rather pay instead of grind (and publishers tend to take advantage of this feeling)

Could not agree more with this. I hate the current state of videogames so much that I'm sort of glad I don't have the time to play them anyways.

Unlocks and Battlepasses .. It's just 'Progress', it's a Crutch. Slightly more tangible milestones for players to achieve so they feel validated in playing, but this is a crutch for the game. The game could be entirely worth playing on it's own, or it could not. It could have competition in it's niche with other titles, .. or not. The intrinsic rewards have mostly been played out, and the industry needs the gaming addicts to keep it afloat so they turn to extrinsic rewards more and more ... The point remains that the publishers and developers, but mostly publishers, really want $ and they want to sell copies to get $. (Developers usually usually prioritize the fun instead of the $ returns.) So publishers push to have little hooks to get people to play mediocre games that do not push boundaries, even selling games that are 98% a copy of a previous already existing title.

That’s all MW2 has going for it. the devs designed mw2 to be a fun/camo grind simulator for Warzone

Because world is all about the money. There is nothing we can really do other than to resist participating in Battlepasses and move to indie games and such. Support the creators you love and endorse their creations.

Battle(non)sense
Soccer, football, basketball, baseball, .. we play & watch these games because "playing" them is fun.
Videogames used to be like that, but why did that change?
Why did unlocks & battlepasses become manadatory and the main reason to play?
Got everything unlocked->no reason to play
This is so sad.
