ONLY IN RURAL IRELAND

An unusual sight of a John Deer tractor parked up at Portarlington Train Station, Co.Laois at 11.15pm last night (Saturday 15th June). My thoughts are that either a young lad that still has his learner permit (around 16 or 17) has driven to the train station to go off somewhere on the train or it’s a farmer who went into the pub across the road from the station.

For those who don’t know, there are certain places in Ireland where students from secondary school that have a learners permit for driving a car (or if they are 16, they can drive a tractor only) drive tractors into school from home. There was even a news story about two lads from Co.Cork having to drive their parents tractors from their farm yards into school as there was no room on the school bus for them.

@northernirishlifts

I only learned this the other day, apparently in the south you can start learning to drive in a car at 16 but can’t take the test till your 17 In the north you have to wait till 17 for all, except drive a tractor which is the same as the south, 16.
