My piano teacher and I have the most fun with traditional gospel music. We spent 1.5 hours on Just A Closer Walk with Thee. I’m a black female and my teacher is a Hispanic male that grew up in Mexico and we were right in step while playing this song.

I totally agree with you. Whilst I like some of the more contemporary sounds, l like them less so if they stray too much from that rich black gospel 'sound '. Having said that, it's the message of the songs - that of the gospel which will always be more important than the music. However as a gospel pianist/keyboardist, I do get u, believe me I do, having thought this myself in recent years as I too have my musical preferences. I don't see it as laying aside our heritage as there will always be new music being written and people will have their musical preferences and interpretation. Overall, people need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, no matter the musical genre.

In an era dominated by contemporary sounds, many musicians are moving away from the rich harmonies and spiritual depth of traditional gospel.
While innovation is vital, it’s equally important to honor and preserve the roots that have shaped this genre. Let’s not forget where we came from. Embracing our musical heritage ensures that the legacy of gospel music continues to inspire and uplift future generations.
