Matthew Hartke

"Many apologists in our time have been wont to argue as though the resurrection of Jesus had to be demonstrated to the disciples by tangible proofs such as would satisfy impartial investigators in a scientific age. In reality the first believers accepted the resurrection precisely because they were men for whom proofs of that kind had no interest. The power of their antecedent faith made it impossible for them to think of Jesus as one to whom death had put an end; they believed that he had been raised from death because otherwise they could not think of him as living. The 'how' of the raising troubled them not the least: that was God's affair." - Alfred Loisy

Thanks for explaining that Christianity was irrational from the start.

I wonder if it was his intent to point out the weaknesses of that particular truth claim.

Apologist :" Your honor, the fact that 500 people witnessed the risen Christ is more than enough evidence to prove his resurrection ". Judge : " very well, you may submit the records of their sworn, signed, notarized, depositions for the court to examine ". Apologist : " Well, the fact that it says, in one of the books written by Luke, that there were 500 people somewhere, sometime that saw something should be enough". Judge : " Luke who? what's his last name ( or his father's name )? And do we even have the names of, say, 100 of the 500 whom he claims were witnesses? " And " Did any of these actually see the crucifixion or see Jesus laid in the tomb, or emerge from it ? Please include accounts of this in their written statements. " Apologist : " But almost nobody can read or write these days and we just trust old Luke, son of somebody, got the whole story right; bingo, bango, bongo gospel! " Judge : " Case dismissed for lack of evidence or eyewitness testimony."

This quote would be much more valuable if it contained Father Loisy's proofs of his statements.

@MatthewHartke So many men would suffer all suffering and would chose to die just because they believed that Jesus resurrected from the dead? Sorry but this argument doesn't seems to me to stand up really.

Is the sort of "logic" you approach any other historical topic with? I hope not.
