I have an important announcement for those of you who've been following me for a while.
I'm quitting lifegyan
(as it currently exists)
Let me explain...
As I'm planning my goals for next year, I'm finding it harder to justify anytime being put into lifegyan.
Some of you may know, I started this channel in 2016. However, inspite of the views and subscribers I was able to get, I never made this channel my main source of income.
I've been freelancing and consulting since 2016, and it's something that I enjoy and make good money from.
But I can't deny lifegyan has been a big part of my identity.
However, after my workload picked up, since 2021 I was not consistent with the uploads. The views declined considerably, and the landscape of YouTube changed.
At the start of 2023, I had decided to be consistent on lifegyan. And I'm happy with the fact that I upload 40+ videos whereas the previous year it was less than 10.
However, consistency of uploads does not mean consistency of views. As I kept uploading, I realized this was taking more energy than I was willing to put in, and I wasn't getting any great results. But I kept pushing.
But the biggest reason I've lost my passion for this is because the topics that get views are topics I have no interest in. Making money quickly, middle class trap, law of attraction "techniques", these are all topics that I fundamentally disagree with. However there's a lot of demand for this content, and that's why people keep making those videos.
So if I'm not getting something out of it, and the audience isn't getting much out of it(low views), then what is the point of making these videos?
Like Einstein said, Insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.
So here are two solutions:
1. Make videos I care about
I want to make high quality in depth videos about self improvement topics I care about. Instead of repeating what everyone is saying, I want to bring you guys new insights. This is very hard to do, but it's an option.
2. Start a podcast
I love talking to interesting people, and with your guys support I could get interesting guests. Podcasts are a lot more rewarding, and you get to learn a lot more than a 10 min video.
I don't know which one I'm going to pick. But I know that making generic self improvement videos about basic topics is not something I can sustain, either passion wise or financially.
I'm also working on a business that's growing quite quickly, so that's going to be my main focus for 2024.
Lifegyan 1.0 has given me a lot. And reading comments and emails from you guys from all over the years still makes me happy. But it's time to move on to something better. I'm looking forward to Lifegyan 2.0
I'm not giving up just yet. But things are going to change.
I hope you come with me along for the ride, and have courage this year to do something you've never done before.
