Google's latest announcement could be a breakthrough for using Artificial Intelligence(AI) in healthcare. During last week's event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai introduced a new algorithm to predict and prevent cardiovascular events with a single retina scan. By matching the scans with a matrix for cardiovascular risks, the algorithm can reveal the heart's health condition through a person's eyes.

So far, the algorithm has shown to be correct in 70% of the cases where it has been tested. If effective, this new AI technique could eliminate the need for a long series of tests and scans currently required to detect cardiovascular risks.

According to Dr Mahipal S Sachdev, Chairman of Centre of Sight, Google's algorithm works in two steps. Firstly, an imaging technique is used to capture a retina picture. This picture displays the blood vessels, which AI then analyzes to provide a diagnosis. "So, if you have a blood vessel that's narrowing or even in cancer cases, leukaemia or diabetic retinopathy can be thrown up," the doctor said. Generative AI can provide human-like ability, but having a doctor involved in medical diagnoses is still advisable. AI can assist doctors in managing more patients, reducing costs, and providing greater accessibility for consumers.
