A BOND FORGED IN PURPLE AND GREEN Chloé’s first encounter with the Lass-Kickers was one of those stories that stays with you forever — the kind that changes everything without seeming like it will. Almost a year earlier, already resigned to her quieter life as her mother’s servant, Chloé had offered to watch Fantine’s daughters for a weekend. Her friend had an important lecture to attend, and it seemed like a good chance for Chloé to feel useful. There was just one problem: one of them had to remain inside the Bordeaux Mansion until Audrey came back. A strict, unbreakable rule. And the two of them… completely ignored it. Audrey was out of the country. The perfect recipe for disaster. Sunday even started normal enough — a vegan lunch, a light game of basketball, the girls laughing, Chloé nearly burning tofu and pretending not to mind. Then Fantine began reminiscing about her school days, when she played basketball for the Lass-Kickers — and how she became their coach even before graduating. Even as a teenager, she had that tireless energy, that aura of someone who carries the world on her back and asks if there’s anything else she can hold. Chloé, fascinated, absorbed every detail. It was the first time she’d ever seen Fantine talk about herself with genuine sparkle in her eyes. Then the phone rang. It was Nikki and Shiva — Audrey’s disaster-prone housemaids — in full-blown panic. They had taken the family’s extremely rare Dobermans out for a walk… but forgot that only Audrey had their papers. The result: the dogs ended up in the municipal pound. Fantine, who is deeply attached to the mansion’s animals, went into absolute panic. “What do we do now?!” And that’s when Chloé committed her brilliant (or suicidal, depending on perspective) act: “Call the Lass-Kickers.” “What?! Are you out of your mind?!” Fantine practically climbed the walls. But Chloé insisted and insisted and insisted… until Fantine sighed, rolled her eyes, and muttered, “For old times’ sake.” Minutes later, Heidi’s SUV — bright red, gigantic, and covered in flame decals — pulled up like the opening shot of a very questionable action movie. Chloé was mesmerized. They were huge, tough, loud women, overflowing with energy, each one taking up space in a way that was almost intimidating — and, at the same time, welcoming. Fantine, without thinking much, announced: “Chloé’s the one who gathered us, so she’s an honorary Lass-Kicker now, alright?” In less than a minute, Betty had already slapped a purple-and-green uniform on her. Heidi insisted on performing an improvised “hazing ritual” that left Chloé sore for days. But she loved it. It was the first sincere welcome she had received since the day she was born. The Doberman rescue… well… absolutely everything happened. The pound employee was a monumental idiot. The argument turned into shouting, Fantine threw a chair at him, it escalated into a full-on brawl, which escalated into a chase — complete with cops and a helicopter on the evening news. Justine, of course, closed the scene with a rooftop parkour show, carrying both dogs strapped to her back like living backpacks. In other words: a perfectly normal Sunday for the Lass-Kickers. The aftermath? Hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages, Hysooz and Betty arrested, Audrey torn apart by tabloid journalists for weeks. And Fantine demoted from mansion coordinator back to regular secretary, privileges gone. But hey — at least the Dobermans made it home. And for the first time, Chloé felt that there was something beyond the marble morgue she lived in. She began wearing the purple-and-green uniform beneath her maid clothes — just to remind herself she wasn’t only Audrey Bordeaux’s daughter. And when Audrey tried to fire Fantine that week… “Mom, she’s our only friend! Please… don’t do something this stupid!” Chloé begged, surprising even herself. Life’s funny like that. Chloé wasn’t looking for belonging. She wasn’t looking for a team. But she found one — forged in purple and green, in sweat, chaos, and real friendship. More than a team, Chloé had finally found a family.
