And when you do this be ready so the strongest most underhanded pushback from leadership you can imagine. Just be ready for it.

True for the organization I was once a part of, since 2013 it’s been, “sounds good, feels off.”

Ahh yes! Heard too often nowadays where “truth” is not necessarily Bible.

Is it not possible for a conservative reformed pastor to be in error then?

I taught Attic/Ionic/Koine Greek to classics students in Europe for 30 years. I'm not Adventist or JW. 1. Every single English translation of the Bible is biased towards a neoplatonic view of the "immortal soul." The Jews never believed in an immortal soul. 2. Punctuation is put into passages that support the neoplatonic view of the immortal soul. 3. There is no eternal cosmic furnace. There is no word "hell." Jesus spoke of the Valley of Hinnom, but his audience were Jews who knew its relation to Jeremiah's proclamation against Judah and judgment. 4. In the Book of Acts, there is no mention of The Valley of Hinnom ("Hell"). The wages of sin is death, not eternal torment. 5. Paul didn't mention eternal torment. 6. There is no eternal torment in the Gospel of John. 7. Eternal life is a gift God gives. The wicked perish and are no more.

Alisa Childers
It’s easy to spot the obvious red flags in a sermon—but that’s not where true discernment is tested.
The real challenge? Catching the moments that sound right… but aren’t.
When a phrase feels biblical or familiar, it’s tempting to nod along. But if you don’t pause to ask, “What do they really mean by that?” you might miss a subtle shift away from truth.
True discernment isn’t just about detecting the outrageous. It’s about recognizing when something is almost right—but built on a completely different foundation.
🎧 Want to see this kind of subtle distortion in action?
Watch Michael Moore and me break down a sermon from a progressive Nashville church—where the words sound right, but the meaning is something else entirely.
