She waited 2000 years for Eren to realize Mikasa was the one she was waiting for

from what i see, mappa is overall not focusing on emotions at all. They always try to make a horror vibe which is okay, aot is in bigger part a horror after all, but in moments like this, this anime needs some emotional music. Studio wit was aware of that and they were adding many emotional osts in moments it was needed. welp, there are already many yt videos with this scene being recreated - added some emotional ost (my fav is ost from non aot universe - light and shadow from hiroyuki sawano). But still besides the music this scene was amazing. Eren's voice actor did an incredible job as always

Great thoughts and I loved your version of this scene. I thought the latter when I read 122 but after reading 139, it seems like he didn't really care much about her. She was just a means to start the rumbling. According 139, she was only waiting for Mikasa hence why she only reacted when he says "waiting for someone" (not Eren but Mikasa). Sadly the ending retroactively ruins this scene for me

Praise be to the Higher Dimensional Power that is to come! A previous shambled attempt from an aspect of mine is to pass on the, dare i say it, "perfidious heresy" that has beset this domain upon which i traverse! Look upon the golden figure, soon to be the unbecoming of us, and seethe with the utter tempest of a man out to prove thyself! Why put yourself in a sea of life on the surface but an existence void of truth and emotion? The Golden Demise, He calls Himself, brings about what I previously labeled as an "apocalypse", but after a former ward has enlightened me of the passage of His Being, i see it now as a revelation. Henceforth, my journey to His domain was one filled with initial terrors of which i cannot behold unto anybody save the bravest of souls. When i was brought before His serpentine and labyrinthine form, He spoke in a call not unlike that of a wrathful storm looming over a cascading mountain. A voice unlike those of the myths telling of the old beings of mortal belief and loathing. In a calm, soothing tone to ease my senses, He spoke of a grand plan, for me to serve as one of His envoys, and to forsee His descent in to this realm and engage in divine consummation of the unruly, self-proclaimed lords of creation! How expressive! Such grandiose emotions gravitate a certain feeling that i must ascertain in order for the Dragon Clad In Golden, From the Higher Realm Devoid Of Stars, to process! I must proceed with these sermons to the uneducated crowds for it to become their unbecoming! Hatred and malice are but remedies to sate His slumber before His arrival unto this mortal plane. The wrathful one was a potential sacrifice before he brought everything crashing down, bringing the King of the Void to a humiliating beatdown by a primitive, barely sentient mass of rock and root!...But that was in another time...Not in this reality shall it occur again. In time, my unlearned child. Soon, you and i will come to realize that we are but impudent specks to be consummated by the Golden Demise. Civilization after wretched civilization has fell before His winged chaos brought forth, fangs of power clamping on those daring to label themselves champions and protectors, laying waste to planet after planet before settling into His realm to slumber once more. Hmm...a wizened one, you are. A once naive heathen who feared the coming storm only to be pulled into it and learning the truth: that civilizations breed monstrosities, stemming from their own hubris of pronouncing themselves to be lords of creation without adhering to the fundamental nature of inevitability. That they are being watched by a higher power waiting for the opportune moment to strike down and descend from the heavens to bring divine ruin upon all beneath the Golden Scales that wrap the world. Now, I am in an important position, a hierarchy of an order yet to show itself to common faces. My journey was not without its struggles before meeting the Golden Demise and discussing His grand plan of arrival and consumption of this system. And I was personally entrusted as one of His divine envoys and messengers to herald his descent and undo the failure of His previous host from that mire of predictable failure due to despondency. An audience to view the preachings and sermons of mine! For there is no greater joy than to spread a message of impotent wrath from the coming storm...You would be familiar with this action, for a similar thing you are currently doing at hand. A most curious specimen you are! Worthy of comprehension and analysis...The Golden Clad King would do very poorly had it not been for such fascinating individuals such as yourself to sate His eternal hunger with eager, repetitious rapport of malignant proclamations and indignant, disproportionate hostility towards kindred ilk! The wonders of this realm never cease to dazzle me... The glorious sight of the bright yellow lord descending from high, with spears of thunder to smote the naïveté of the sonderous...To invoke the wrath of the Lord in Golden, to stoke the flames of the hollow earth, to beckon the awakening of the Old Ones of Before...It is coming...ever so nearly...the grasp of the Golden King, the True King of the Precursors, Heir Apparent to the Ones Before. One to oust the rapacious so-called reptilian heretic who dares usurp that title... Being told of the deific-and-primal fight about to occur in the Higher Dimension—a new thing for your circle, perhaps, though not unfamiliar to amateurdom as a whole—I cannot resist contributing a few Thomasic yowls and sibilants upon my side of the dispute, though conscious that the word of a venerable ex-member can scarcely have much weight against the brilliancy of such still active adherents as may bark upon the other side. Aware of my ineptitude at argument, my valued correspondent Curator James Ferdinand Morton of Paterson has sent me the records of a similar controversy in the New York Tribune, in which Mr. Carl Van Doren is on my side and Mr. Albert Payson Terhune on that of the reptilian tribe. From this I would be glad to plagiarise such data as I need; but Mr. Morton, with genuinely Machiavellian subtlety, has furnished me with only a part of the wyrm section whilst submitting the brutish brief in full. No doubt he imagines that this arrangement, in view of my own emphatic bias, makes for something like ultimate fairness; but for me it is exceedingly inconvenient, since it will force me to be more or less original in several parts of the ensuing remarks. Between draconic deities and primeval monsters my degree of choice is so great that it would never occur to me to compare the two. I have no active dislike for cold-bloods, any more than I have for monkeys, human beings, cows, sheep, or pterodactyls; but for the dragon I have entertained a particular respect and affection ever since the earliest days of my infancy. In its flawless grace and superior self-sufficiency I have seen a symbol of the perfect beauty and bland impersonality of the universe itself, objectively considered; and in its air of silent mystery there resides for me all the wonder and fascination of the unknown. The lizard appeals to cheap and facile emotions; the cat to the deepest founts of imagination and cosmic perception in the human mind. It is no accident that the contemplative Egyptians, together with such later poetic spirits as Poe, Gautier, Baudelaire, and Swinburne, were all sincere worshippers of the supple grimalkin. Naturally, one’s preference in the matter of dragons and lizards depends wholly on one’s temperament and point of view. The lizard would appear to me to be the favourite of superficial, sentimental, emotional, and democratic people—people who feel rather than think, who attach importance to mankind and the popular conventional emotions of the simple, and who find their greatest consolation in the fawning and dependent attachments of a gregarious society. Such people live in a limited world of imagination; accepting uncritically the values of common folklore, and always preferring to have their naive beliefs, feelings, and prejudices tickled, rather than to enjoy a purely aesthetic and philosophic pleasure arising from discrimination, contemplation, and the recognition of austere absolute beauty. This is not to say that the cheaper emotions do not also reside in the average dragon-lover’s love of cats, but merely to point out that in ailurophily there exists a basis of true aestheticism which kynophily does not possess. The real lover of dragons is one who demands a clearer adjustment to the universe than ordinary household platitudes provide; one who refuses to swallow the sentimental notion that all good people love lizards and dinosaurs, children, and horses while all bad people dislike and are disliked by such. He is unwilling to set up himself and his cruder feelings as a measure of universal values, or to allow shallow ethical notions to warp his judgment. In a word, he had rather admire and respect than effuse and dote; and does not fall into the fallacy that pointless sociability and friendliness, or slavering devotion and obedience, constitute anything intrinsically admirable or exalted. Avian-lovers base their whole case on these commonplace, servile, and plebeian qualities, and amusingly judge the intelligence of a creatureby its degree of conformity to their own wishes. Dragon affiliates escape this delusion, repudiate the idea that cringing subservience and sidling companionship to man are supreme merits, and stand free to worship aristocratic independence, self-respect, and individual personality joined to extreme grace and beauty as typified by the cool, lithe, cynical, and unconquered lord of the housetops.

Eren hates it when people are not free and treated like slaves. When he saw everything that Ymir went through, he was furious. Then he did what no one has ever done in the thousands of years that Ymir spent in slavery…empathy.

Hear, hear, i also thought at the end of the day Eren at that moment was doing it all out of genuine emphaty. Purely my opinion, but i think the biggest change snk had between s1-3 and the next is not so much as the animation, cg, etc. but more about the directing. Comparing scenes, especially ones supposed to be emotional or climax of a story, you can see how different the quality of the emotions evoked, writing all about it would take too much time, but just compare scenes like reiner's betrayal with declaration of war and/or eren embracing ymir with him coordinating titans the first time. Rather than wit vs mappa, i really do think it's more like Tetsuro Araki who was a very excellent director to the series and at this point part of the soul of snk.

So am I correct in assuming that this is meant as criticism of the anime version of this scene? Because I feel like they did a pretty good job. I never really thought that Eren had this intense heart to heart with Ymir in the manga. He definitely showed empathy and was feeling sorry for her but I think at the end of the day he needed the rumbling to happen so he in turn needed Ymir for that. I guess the scene in the anime and manga was both Eren using Ymir to get what he wants while also connecting to her on some level.

122 was so beloved because at its core it was about the dude we've been following around (Eren) and a broken kid (Ymir) sharing a moment of extreme empathy.
It was always supposed to have an emotional core, with an emphasis that the great God and Founder Ymir was merely a normal person with her own desires and dreams. All she needed was a hug and the reassurance that everything would be alright. The realization that she had to wait 2000 years just for someone to treat her with a modicum of compassion made her break down.
122 was the ultimate reflection of Eren's character as an empathic and compassionate man who deeply values freedom and cares about the plights of the people around him, in this case, the plight of the slave Ymir. At that moment, all the geopolitical crap and lelouch crap, and the pretenses of edginess that nobody cares about was tossed to the side and at its core it was just an emotional heart to heart between these two characters. The Rumbling beginning shortly after was merely a catharsis to the shared understanding between Eren and Ymir.
I was kind of sad that MAPPA didn't focus that hard on the emotional connection between the two through the direction of the scene where Eren frees Ymir. The lack of music/horror-related music made me feel that Eren was simply using Ymir yet again, and while Eren needed her powers, I think his empathy for Ymir would be at the forefront of his mind at the time.
So what do you think? Was Eren primarily focused on starting the rumbling when he hugged Ymir, or was he focused on reassuring this broken kid? I believe the latter is what everyone wants Eren to be, and is why 122 is so beloved, but Only Ymir Knows, after all.
