Which generation of PlayStation Graphics are your favorite?

There’s something so satisfying about PS1 graphics; you can just feel the creativity and innovation from developers to get around the graphical limitations of the console. A game like Crash Bandicoot has a hundred times the charm and artistic integrity of modern games for me.

The PS2 was the game changer. Going from the original PlayStation’s 32 Bits to the PlayStation 2’s 128 Bits was such a ridiculous leap. For the first time in game graphics could come close to matching the pre-rendered cutscenes.

PS1 was definitely charming but had limitations. PS2 was like "This is the future!" We thought we were in the Matrix back then 😂

PS1 and N64 graphics are my favorite ever, that era of gaming is perfection <3 (but also absolutely love PS2, sooooo many 10/10 games)

PS1 with pre rendered backgrounds is so charming. It just creates a special atmosphere that can only be captured in that era. Though the PS2 visuals is so clean. Something about the PS2, the y2k future aesthetic about it, the music, its all so good. The graphics were still in an artistic style that to this day, still looks amazing. The PS3 is horrendous! They got rid of style for more realism and it just made that whole generation so ugly to look at.

PS1 by far. It's hard to explain but I just love that sort of "blocky" look. The PS2 is often a lot more uncanny valley for me.

grew up with ps1 and stayed with playstation ever since. ps3 was my personal favorite, it had metal gear solid 4, infamous 1 & 2, ratchet & clank a crack in time, fifa worldcup 2010, little big planet 1 & 2, and my personal favorite, playstation home. to me the ps3 in the late 2000s and early 2010s were the absolute peak of playstation, and its depressing that we’ll never have an era like that era ever again, all of the games ive mentioned are stuck on the ps3, and the servers for lbp and pshome are long gone. the only thing gamingwise im looking forward to now is gta 6, which looks amazing lol

From a developer perspective, I like hardware limitations because they force creativity instead of focusing on fidelity. Still, fidelity can be limiting to vision. I love working on the PS1 the most, but creatively it is very restrictive, making me lean toward the PS2 "era" as the best (developing for the PS2 itself is painful). I feel like the PS3 is nice because now there are almost no limitations, but in turn fidelity expectations start making time and personnel overheads get insane. In turn, I feel like the PS4 era is where it falls apart. You need tons of people and huge budgets just to fill out graphical aspects. The huge budget required then deemphasizes creativity (since creativity equates to risk). Likewise, the diminished return of performance pops up because the abundance of resouces encourages cutting corners instead of doing things "right" (meaning "cohesively"). Especially since now most your development resources are going to fidelity and that cost needs made up for somewhere else.

PS1 and 2 of course. So hard to choose. On one hand, PS2 gave us Okami and Ico. On ths other, name a PS2 game with a sexier vibe than Racing Lagoon's overworld map.

There's a certain charm to the PS2 era of games. It's like the perfect balance between realism and charming art style. I'll take something like Vice City over GTA V any day, just to name one example. That being said there are some modern games that are stunning but overall that generation is my favorite.

I love the ps2 aesthetic but to me high fidelity with great art direction is the holy grail. E.g. games like bloodborne, Dead Space Remake or Metaphor

ps2 since games started to pull off realism but it had to be stylised still.

This is a difficult question because for me, it depends per game. And per art style. If Kya: Dark Lineage and Rayman 2 or 3 or the Tak games, were to be remade for current gen, it wouldn't be the same. There's something about the models and presentation that WORKS for the (from today's lens) limited technology. Meanwhile i have trouble imagining Darksiders in PS1/2 graphics. They made good use of what was available to translate the art style into 3D in a way that's very nice. Though there is something i prefer about DS1 and 2's graphics over DS3 and DSGenesis' (PS4/current gen). REALLY hope the new upcoming Darksiders game will be more like DS1 and 2.
