Before You Break My Heart ❤️🩹 I love that the only feature on my album is my younger self. A conscious choice as I wanted this project to be a full introduction to me and my journey. When I started making this record, I wanted to reference and highlight the music that made me the artist I am today. And as a @DianaRoss ✨superfan✨, ‘Stop In The Name Of Love’ by The Supremes was one of my favourites.
I was in the studio finishing stuff with @mikesabathchannel, showing him childhood videos when we found one of me singing the chorus. Mike did his thing, and we finished writing it with Pablo Bowman 💫 The song is written from the perspective of my younger self, begging me not to forget her and how far we’ve come. This industry can really grind you down, and I’ve been unkind to myself too much over the years. This song reminds me to be proud of myself and to look after my inner child. ‘WOULD YOU PUT ME IN THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE MAIN STAGE OF YOUR MIND SO WE CAN BOTH SHINE?’ might just be one of my fave lyrics/moments in a song we’ve written.
The video was shot by one of my favourite directors right now Niya Taylor ⭐️ We shot it in my hometown South Shields on the day of my BBC Proms show which felt so special. But the most special part was having my niece Amara play little Jade 🥹 She is so amazing, so talented, and so brave - her first ever performance being onstage at The Glasshouse! Kinda healing having your mini me by your side 🫶🏽 Thank you Niya, Amara and everyone who made this video happen 💐
The response to this song has been incredible and I’ve loved seeing the fans post videos showing love to their younger selves for getting them where they are today ♥️ Thank you for reminding what music is all about 🌌
