🐊 New video on building a school in Kenshi is out now! This thumbnail was wild to put together, I'm going to start posting these on Patreon and for channel members here but I wanted to share the process of making this thumbnail.
When I comission thumbnails, I often look for as many refrences both in and out of game. For this video, I wanted to recreate a scene from the video near the 35 minute mark, where I have a bit of a classroom setup in game with a beak thing in cage. I loved this scene and it stood out in my head after recording it so I started to brainstorm how I could reposition the characters to truly show off the vibe of the scene.
Quickly I take the photos I have from game and use those to show where I'd like each character to go and the framing. A lot of it is described through text which I often do in google documents which I'll link at the end, but these visual refrences even while crazy and sloppy looking help guide the process and artists as they work on the sketch.
The sketch I got back this time was phenominal, I had little to critique or say to change so coloring was a straight forward process! I really wanted the beak thing to be breaking through the cage with it's head past a chalkboard which really set the show I think.
In the end, I got a pretty cool thumbnail which was drawn by artists which I directed with my swag creative vision. It's awesome to be able to do stuff like this, especially for these videos that take me dozens of hours to make. When they take that much effort it's nice to get a cool art piece to show it off in a special way. Todays video is already doing really well and due to the support I get on these videos I'm able to not only get things like thumbnails, artists and editors lined up but also pay myself enough to live comfortably and pay bills.
