I've got hold on an early version of the Beckhoff CX9240 PLC. This is a brand new, soon-to-be released PLC. What's so special about it is that it's Beckhoff's first PLC running Linux as operating system. If you aren't comfortable running Windows or Tc/BSD, this might be a great option for you. This means that it's possible to combine all the applications that you can run on Linux with the real-time execution of your TwinCAT 3 PLC executables. What's not to like about that?

I'll be doing some evaluation of it, and if all goes well, I might end up ordering a larger quantity of them for a big client project. I've had several potential client projects NOT choosing Beckhoff because they didn't have a controller running Linux. Might the CX9240 change this? I'll make sure to share as much as possible here on YouTube.

I do not really care if the OS is Linux or something else. The problem I have is that since the end of Windows CE Beckhoff does not have a lightweight OS with a GUI. TwinCAT/BSD was a nice idea, but without a visualization you dont have a way for customers to change any program settings. Now Windows 10 LTSC works well feature wise, but you need at least a CX2033 for decent performance (CX5230 if you are OK with barely working) and this blows the budget for simpler applications. It is not only the hardware cost. Your TC3 licenses are already a lot more expensive in performance class 50 despite only needing 30. Also disk space requirements have gone up from 64MB to 40GB (80GB if you want to update Windows).

@3dtronics

Hi Jakob, in the description you wrote that you had several project in which the customer wanted a Linux controller, what did you use to accomplish the goal?

@mezzer34

Any infomation on why they have developed both BSD and Linux as OS options? Someone from Beckhoff told me (When they first started offering BSD) that they couldn't do linux because of the licencing requirements. I guess they have resolved that now? I find it suprising they will offer both OS options - Thats a lot of extra work to maintain.

Will this be compatible with all programming languages?

Why does the client need Linux all of a sudden? I mean what's the advantage for the end user? I thought Windows is a more user friendly
