Clay Hayes

This year I’ve got a couple late season #flintlock hunts on the list. After last year’s embarrassing misses I’ve committed to putting in some serious range time with the .50 cal. It’s starting to come together. After a bit of fiddling with loads and iron sights, I was able to get the group shown here at 100 yards. I’m holding about a 6” group at 150 with a 12” drop. 100grains FFg pushing a Great Plains 385gr conical bullet.

Clay I am using 110 gr 2f with 413 gr pure lead max bullet 54cal for elk. Bore butter for lube in a flintlock. 28," barrel 1:24 twist rate. Felt wad between bullet and powder. I find flintlock need more power due to the open flash hole loss . Percussion. I needs far less power to perform . I swapped out the primitive sites for fiber optics. My old eyes can't use old iron anymore. Love your channel. Good hunting 👍

I love your flintlock it is a a work of art , the stock is beautiful. Hunting elk with a 50 cal a bit under gunned. I switched to a 54cal Lyman never looked back , as far as powder 3fff burners hotter and cleaner more down range energy. Roundball with .018 patch seems to work the best for my gun. I shot everything I could stuff down the barrel to figure out what shot the best. Like to see a video about you black powder guns . I am a new subscriber to your channel thanks for great videos . 👍

Glad to see you are sticking with it. We really enjoyed watching your late season hunts with the flintlock. My 13 year old son is using a 54. Hawken this year and is loving it. I am using a 50. Pennsylvania flintlock. My best group with patch and ball is 5" at 80 yards with 80gr of 2FG. It's definitely like trad archery...you need to really work at it to get hunt worthy.

@shadowcastre

All my groups improved by switching to 3f powder. I no longer use 2f unless I have to.

I currently own a 50cal deerhunter flintlock. I use 80gr of 2F with a 250gr conical for 100yd. It was wild to go from round ball at 50yd to be able to hit my target at 100.

@YeahBuck36

Come to Pennsylvania, only state that has a dedicated flintlock season!

I started using a postage scale to weigh my charge. That helped my consistency at a longer distance tremendously

That'll kill an elk. As a former Idaho boy who used to hunt your same areas, I'm interested and following these late season hunts. Bring home the meat!

Be interesting to see how a big head wind and a super cold gun and powder changes impact.

Hey clay just wondering if you tried going down in powder I find with mine about 75 gr. Of 3f groups the best. But that’s still a good group with an ole smooth bore. I also shoot No Excuses bullets they are an excellent bullet taken lots with them they come from the old Doc. White bullets

Haven’t re-watched last years videos, but I seem to remember a slight hang fire issue last year…
