Recognizing this profound responsibility, Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero has been at the forefront of environmental and wildlife conservation, leading numerous initiatives to protect Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
Under his visionary leadership, Umandawa Global Buddhist Village has undertaken the restoration of Hurulu Lake in Habarana’s Eco Park, located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province.
This effort is a continuation of his unwavering commitment to preserving ecosystems and safeguarding the lives of Sri Lanka’s elephants, who are increasingly vulnerable due to habitat destruction and human activities.
The reservoir, restored at a cost of 10 million rupees, was primarily funded by Cha’s Organic, a Sri Lankan-owned organic food company based in Canada. The company’s founder, Mr. Chanaka Kurera, along with his team, former High Commissioner to Canada Mr. Harsha Kumara Navaratne, the Director General of Wildlife Conservation, local wildlife officers, and the Chairman of the Safari Jeep Association, all contributed to this noble effort.
On February 22, 2025, Most Venerable Siri Samanthabhadra Thero officially inaugurated the restored reservoir, ensuring a sustainable water source for all living beings. This initiative is yet another testament to his dedication to protecting the environment, fostering harmony between humans and wildlife.
