been a long while (work is always the biggest slog in any case) but what is your take on season 4 of the wire vs season 5 of brba? personally i think both are equal though i do have a slight preference for season 4 of the wire. my distribution would go something like this (don't mind me, im a bit too lazy to type out the reasoning for everything): introduction: the wire (boys of summer >= live free or die) two amazing introductions. boys of summer is the better episode, but live free or die does punch above its weight. the almost enigmatic introduction sequence and cold open are a perfect set up to the rest of the season (and episode). boys of summer just has better exposition that's more pertinent to the season while also retaining a bit of continuity from season 3. overall, this is closer than one may realize. protagonist: breaking bad (walter >>>>>> whoever it is) deuteragonist: breaking bad (jesse >> michael) this feels a bit difficult to give to breaking bad. michael was easily one of my favorite characters in this show. however, he doesn't compare to jesse writing wise. tritagonist: breaking bad (hank negative diffs carcetti) antagonist: breaking bad (marlo > hank) side cast: the wire (not close) plot: breaking bad (close) story: the wire (close) depth/complexity: the wire themes: the wire (very close) cycle of violence/social discohesion/institutional decay/futility/nature versus nurture/the value of human life/decay of youth (the wire) >== masculinity/power lust/morality/family/time/the nature of love/self-acceptance (breaking bad) symbolism: breaking bad (close) the watch/ozymandias/color palette >= chess/the streets parallels: breaking bad dynamics: breaking bad main dynamic: breaking bad (walter and jesse >>>>>) emotion: the wire (close) world building: the wire arcs: the wire (close) best arc: the wire (school >===== the fall of heisenberg) best episode: the wire (final grades >= ozymandias) peaks: breaking bad highest peak: the wire (bodies conclusion >== we're a family) character work: breaking bad external conflicts: the wire internal conflicts: breaking bad buildup: the wire payoffs: breaking bad impact: the wire (close) final episode: the wire (final grades >> felina) conclusion: breaking bad (>) overall: both share the top spot for my #1 season in TV (i prefer the wire though tbh)
