Panzer Lehr saw heavy fighting at Villers Bocahe and near St. Lo. It remained committed until losses reduced it to a combat ineffective level.

Panzer lehr was literally formed from experienced training instructors who had experience and had lots of tanks from different training depots, and they tied down a lot of allied troops some allied soldiers recounting their unique uniforms as they were mixed from different schools

The jugend went in as a green division no prior combat and they gave a good account of themselves.

I’m just glad that some have progressed further than “Germans were bad!”

Das Reich??? They came very late to the party. The 21st was already there and in-place. The 21st did make a showing. However, lack of reserves and in-adequate and older dated armor sealed their fate. This unit got decimated in the Falaise pocket. The Panzer Lehr division was the only division which had tiger tanks. However, this unit only had 10 Tiger 1 and 5 Tiger 2 tanks in 1944. However, by the time of June-1 1944; there were only about 3 or so Tiger tanks operational for the invasion. So, all-in-all, the Germans really were outmatched and outgunned during the invasion. Plus, the allies, (USA), enjoyed air-supremacy during the campaign. This supremacy really meant the Germans had no ability for any real kind of logistical support.

Ask Tommy Atkins about Caen, their Day 1 objective for Overlord... think it took about a month, due to a bunch of boys...12th performed very well..

@roberthicks4923

Depends on your definition of "perform". The 12 checked the Canadian advance, but were so badly mauled they needed to be rebuilt.

HitlerJugen held up Montgomery up at Caen over a month when he was to take it on D-Day+3. They were children, 16 years old, true believers.

The Das Reich lost most of their tanks trying to get to Normandy. It would be the 12th who did the most damage in Normandy.
