The inside coating of some cans are toxic if heated. They are there to prevent the contents from causing the can to rust quickly.

This truly all depends on location. I've seen people teach about using gourds and plant leaves, to people dropping embers and heated stones into sand mounds.

A large folded sheet of paper filled with water, it would have a lot of surface area over a fire to heat the contents up fairly quickly compared to the other options, obviously you would have to be careful how close it is to the fire but as long as flames don’t contact it, it should work ok.

Banana leaves or fig or grape vine leaves. Wrapped over the food or tin foil I guess and you drop your item in the coals. Potatoes in tin foil and fish is good.
