Without training, they would match up with top athletes. With training, they will dominate.

They would lose big. Although strong as hell for the time, modern strong men are enhanced with modern drugs. It would be like putting a sprinter from the 1700's against a modern sprinter of today. There is a reason why athletic records get broken. Not to mention Neanderthals were built for survival and their brains were only advanced enough for this as well. In a competition they wouldn't understand why they were doing the things they were expected to do and if you tried to explain it to them they wouldn't understand you either. I estimate 5-7 years before they could compete with modern humans. 2-3yrs to learn and understand the language and then 3-5yrs to train them in sport specific movements.

They would totally destroy a modern athlete. Those dudes were raised in a hostile environment. They killed megafauna for breakfast while wearing hydes in cold weather, usually trailing them for days. What we call getting stranded in the wilderness is just another Tuesday for them.

They'd definitely struggle on technique based events. But if they had time to train, the best Neanderthal athletes would match the best modern athletes for sure simply because they are us, just a race of Homo sapiens.

If a Neanderthal competed in a modern-day strongman competition, what would happen?
