Dani's World

When Black people celebrate achievements, we're often shunned by comments from white folks screaming, "Why does race matter?" For starters, Black doctors matter because representation matters. Black psychologists make up only 2% of all the psychologists here in America. Race matters in therapy because many Black patients seeking services are often pigeonholed, overlooked, and not taken seriously nor treated with dignity and respect therefore resulting in poorer healthcare treatment, negatively impacting healthcare outcomes. Race matters because for hundreds of years Blacks were denied equal opportunity and access to education resulting in a disproportionate number of Black men and women overrepresented in the prison systems and underrepresented in institutions of higher learning. Race matters because young Black boys and girls feel inspired to see themselves in Black doctors, lawyers, teachers, police, and all other professions knowing that if we made it, they can also make it too. When you see a Black woman such as myself basking in her glory, just understand I've overcome many obstacles and torn down many barriers, internally and externally to wear this crown. Respectfully.💜 -Danielle Leach (2021)
