Chemistry in this movie is made by contradicting characters.Deadpool makes jokes everytime while wolverine actually is annoyed from him. This is fun to watch for the audience at the big screen

Characters have chemistry when they see eachother on a deeper level. Under the skin/projected personality. They form a link with eachother with love, hate or everything between.

From my understanding, Character chemistry can usually come from differing personalities or perspectives, For instance, one of the reasons why the character chemistry in Breaking Bad works so well is the difference in Walt and Jesse’s personalities; on a basic level being that Walt is book smart and Jesse is street smart, but if you go deeper you can also see that Jesse is more emotional and regretful while Walt is more cold and narcissistic

I feel chemistry comes from the character’s knowledge of each other and how they use that to boost each other through their character arcs. Or to occasionally poke fun.

Lots of people saying that they should have conflicting personalities, but they can also just have differing and complementary personalities that don't imediately conflict. Also similar personalities but conflicting stances can work great

First and foremost is fantastic actors. Choosing good actors or actor/director pairings helps bring out the characters in the writings. Second is having a dynamic foil. Something that both characters are able to attach to in the other person that is different from their own. It creates a perfect "grass is always greener" situation when the thing they like most about the other person is the thing the other person likes the least in themselves and vice versa. Another strong element is fluid situations, where the values of the characters are presented through situations to their counterparts which helps grow appreciation and showcase your characters strengths

Standing back to back with arms crossed and a "can you believe THIS GUY" look on their faces = chemistry

I like to think of Charlie and Pim from smiling friends. The perfect example of a best friend dynamic In recent years

The same thing that makes all good stories work. Compelling characters with conflicting ideals and interesting scenarios and outcomes. Take two of those characters, make their goals align and see what happens

Complimentary personality traits, but with just enough similarities underneath that allows them to see each other on a deeper level, even if neither is willing to admit it :)

I’d say good chemistry makes characters attack each others pressure points and vent them out. Kind of like therapy

I think the characters need to at least somewhat clash. Either they just straight up don't like each other, but are forced to be together (i.e. Wolverine in the beginning of D&W) or they just have such different mannerisms and behaviour (i.e. Watson and Sherlock Holmes)

I think it can be dynamics that are just fun to write. It's great to see two characters on the same page forming a great plan and working together for payoffs, as is seeing two characters in conflict. Enjoy the dynamic and your audience will likely enjoy it too.

Well written characters that stick to their traits and writing that makes sure their traits are in direct contrast to the other yet keeping some of what connects them clear and out in the open. Both wanted to be loved they push ppl away in different ways.

Deadpool and Wolverine work so well because they’re almost polar opposite character-wise but then they also share a lot like their violent nature, they’re extremely well experienced in combat and diverse in it, they both are basically immortal with how long they live and can regenerate from a lot, most of all I think when they’re “forced” to be together and when you see how they actually relate deep down to each other and the audience in different ways and they bring out different sides of each other that are relatable

Worldviews that challenge each other. In Star Wars Luke and Leia are heroes, Han is selfish. Luke opens to the Force, Han dismisses it. They play against each other

I think a big part of a character dynamic is having the characters be a foil to one another. Having to people in opposition to each other is generally a good way to make the interaction between two characters more interesting

In both romance and friendships I think one thing I notice is that the main character has a void in them in a certain aspects of their lives and another character helps them fill that void

Certainly something to do with it is characters that complement each other’s arcs. Whether positively or negatively impacting the other character’s growth, dynamics that play off of each other are always entertaining.

I think a good way to create chemistry is to do what Tolkien did with Legolas & Gimli: have two opposites attract by circumstance, but as the story continues, have some of its events make them genuinely grow more as friends. But that's just if you're making friendship. Otherwise, I got nothing, save for the way Mario & Donkey Kong were portrayed in the Super Mario Bros Movie

The Closer Look
How do you write character chemistry? It's a really interesting question, and it's the focus of my upcoming video. I'll be looking at Deadpool & Wolverine, Sherlock & Watson, and a bunch of other great pairings.
What do you think are the principles behind great chemistry?
