Sanctuary Asia

At times, all it takes to change the course of history is one determined person, a group united by passion, or a single act of courage that turns the tide in favour of a cause. The remarkable work of these Nature Influencers continues to shape our understanding of the wild wonders of our world. Their voices still inspire us to stand up for a healthier planet. This issue of Sanctuary Cub is a heartfelt tribute to those who, against all odds, championed one of the most vital causes of our time.

In this July 2025 edition, we journey through history – from the Chipko movement of the 1970s that stood against deforestation, to the triumphs of tiger conservation under Project Tiger. We pay tribute to Valmik Thapar, one of India’s most dedicated wildlife champions, who we lost recently. We also meet Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, whose experience with a single wildlife rescue ignited a lifelong mission to build an army of over 20,000 women committed to saving an endangered stork.

The issue also highlights artists who, through various mediums – from painting and filmmaking to poetry – have used their craft to influence people to protect nature. You’ll meet Isha Tomar, a 27-year-old film programmer and researcher, who discusses the influence of cinema on conservation. In this issue’s Nature Watch, we celebrate a hero to herpetologists everywhere: Romulus Whitaker, the man who made us fall in love with all sorts of scaled creatures.

We hope this issue inspires you to do something meaningful for our planet and the wild creatures that call it home and influence change!
