On this day, 60 years ago, the ABC adopted the "waveform" as our official logo. Before May 1st 1965, we used many different logos on our cars, stationery and microphone badges.
Bill Kennard, who worked in the ABC TV graphics department, got the idea to use the waveform while using an oscilloscope, which creates a Lissajous figure when it plots different but related electrical frequencies.
Bill's idea saved the day because management held a contest to design a new ABC logo in 1963, but the judges didn't think any of the entries were suitable!
