ABC Australia

On this day, 60 years ago, the ABC adopted the "waveform" as our official logo. Before May 1st 1965, we used many different logos on our cars, stationery and microphone badges.

Bill Kennard, who worked in the ABC TV graphics department, got the idea to use the waveform while using an oscilloscope, which creates a Lissajous figure when it plots different but related electrical frequencies.

Bill's idea saved the day because management held a contest to design a new ABC logo in 1963, but the judges didn't think any of the entries were suitable!

While we've changed its look over the last 60 years, the waveform shape has remained the same. If you want to look at some more history, here are some funky 1970s TV idents:

Who would have ever thought ABC actually started with a cool or unique idea compared to how the channel runs nowadays … let’s be real every logo any useless Australian media company used in the last 40 years was ripped off techno artists and indie graphic designers

I love the series of ads the ABC produced with people (some ordinary, some musos etc) doing the logo β˜οΈπŸ«΅πŸ‘‡πŸ‘†πŸ«΅
