Is there even such a thing as good game dev advice?

@iAmGGlitch

i think the big thing is that tons of gamedev advice is good, but there is no such thing as a universally good gamedev advice. there is always an exception always.

@sethbettwieser

there is definitely bad game dev advice, which implies the existence of good game dev advice.

Best bit of advice that applies to literally everyone, new and experienced alike: Limit your scope. Be mindful of the resources you have available. Don't think you can make the next WoW in a year on nothing but pizza and passion.

Of course. But a ton is subjective

I think “Choose your battles wisely” is pretty universally good game dev advice unless your team cherry

Good advice in artistic fields is whatever generates thought.

It depends on context. I started asking people why they're making games, what their goals are etc before I give advice now.

Advice needs a lotta qualifiers but in a given context good advice can exist

Only one I give is "Don't give up".

Getting people to follow good advice is the difficult part lack of knowledge is easier to fix than lack of willpower for execution

I don't think there is such a thing as good advice, but hearing advice is useful because it gives you more perspectives to understand your problems from

In my experience even more specific advice like Sakurai's videos is great just when you're starting out with no experience. Once you have experience with a project you may end up in a unique situation when general advice doesn't really help. That being said I'm interested in hearing what works for other people and sometimes there's a little tip or tweak from their process to learn from.

@AVA_gamedev

Best two pieces of advice I've heard are to start making games and to make friends (AKA networking)

My advise: Don't make an indie game with the goal to make money.

I think the deeper you get in the field the harder it is to find. There is a lot of good advice for beginners conceptualizing their first game. A lot less for making a stable studio

I think both good and bad advice will inspire and keep your brain busy in some way.

Advice doesn't replace the hard part(making a game) but it can make the hard part easier
