Zigbee for nearby devices. Z-wave for devices far away. All the devices in my garage are Z-wave because my garage is 100 feet from my hub.

I use both Zigby and Z-Wave but prefer Z-Wave because of the range.

I only use Zwave and zigbee, but zwave is more reliable in my experience. But zigbee has more options and is usually cheaper

Zigby because most every automation hub has some form of Zigby controller in it, including a lot of the echoes now. But I have high hopes for homey Pro as SmartThings is still not local enough.

Power available = wifi (mqtt) Battery operated = zigbee (z2mqtt)

If you are limiting the choice to home automation protocols, then the current leader is Zigbee hands down because most newer power hubs include this protocol in their quiver (Aqara M3, Hubitat, Homey Pro) or users add a Zigbee dongle to the likes of Home Assistant. There are even fringe hubs like Sonoff, Aeotec, Treatlife, Moes, Tuya, and Zemismart all have Zigbee controller based hubs. The reliability over WiFi and wide variety of devices offered is the biggest attraction of Zigbee over the other protocols. In 12 months though, all this being said, I have no-doubt Matter over Thread will rise to take the crown because of its cross-platform architecture. (Side-bar)…As far as a smart home protocol-only vote, I’m going to put a very strong dark horse contender into this race…LoRa (915MHz) from Yolink. Not very mainstream, but has all the upside of the protocols listed and then some…1/4 mile long range (plus signal strength through masonry and steel), D2D connectivity, and operational without need for internet (cellular backup is also optional). The only Achilles heal is no local control (yet).
