It's a toss, I'd probably take both, a tent and a tarp. Both can have benefits.

Tent.. comes with a tarp, rope, steel ground stakes, and a carry bag. All of which can be re-purposed for other uses if needed. (Tent storage bag can be used for foraging, and tinder gathering. And the rain tarp can be used to collect water for instance.)

I prefer the hammock. I go into heavily vegetated areas so clear ground is rare. Hilly areas are suited to hammocks. Off the ground and away from ground based insects and animals. No ground water to content with during rain events. Light weight. Can be used for other purposes, carry bag, wind break, shade, sail, blanket…etc.

Florida mosquitos will carry you off if not enclosed. Tent is my choice.

Tarp- Can be used for many things including gathering materials for your trip into the woods. Quickly put up and get out of the elements. Little duck tape and you’re golden.
