Unleash The Paws

On Halloween, we picked up two dogs from the euthanasia list at Carthage Panola County Pound , a 6-year-old black lab named Obi, and his 10-month-old sister Puppo, who we renamed Sabrina.

They were surrendered by their owner because they “no longer had time” after having a baby. That in itself is a heartbreaking reminder to truly think ahead before getting a dog, especially if you’re planning big life changes like starting a family.

The following night, we noticed that Sabrina wasn’t feeling well. She couldn’t keep food or water down and was vomiting and having diarrhea. We tested her right away, and sadly, she tested positive for parvo.

This is the harsh reality of rescue work in Texas. Many shelters, like Carthage Panola County Pound, receive very minimal government funding. They operate as holding facilities, meaning furry souls are either adopted, rescued, or euthanized and because space is extremely limited, they simply can’t hold onto them for long periods of time. These shelters can’t just shut down for a year or even temporarily to do a deep cleaning, especially when they receive new intakes every day and new cases of parvo and other diseases constantly come in.

We want to take a moment to thank the staff and volunteers at Carthage Panola County Pound for continuing to fight for these animals every single day, despite being constantly blamed by the public for things that are truly not their fault. The real problem lies with irresponsible owners who abandon, neglect, or fail to care for their pets and until people start being more responsible and compassionate, this cycle will never end. Maybe stronger laws could help, but what we really need is for people to care more.

That leaves rescues like ours with heartbreaking choices , do we leave the puppies behind to be euthanized, or do we pull them, knowing they might be sick and face expensive medical bills we do struggle to afford, relying on the community’s support to give them a fighting chance?

But as long as we can, we’ll keep fighting for dogs like Sabrina. She and so many others deserve a chance at life, love, and healing.

Please keep sweet Sabrina in your thoughts as she fights for her life.
If you’d like to help Sabrina get the medical care she needs, please consider donating we will have donation links in the comment section below. We’re also attaching a copy of our invoice from today’s vet visit. The total cost for all her medications is around $600, and we will be caring for her around the clock with medications and fluid therapy. If she needs hospitalization, costs could quickly rise into the thousands. Every donation helps us give her the best chance possible. Thank you so much for your support!
