USA TODAY

By fall 2024, student attendance in #Fresno Unified School District had nearly rebounded from the surge in absenteeism triggered by pandemic-related school closures, Superintendent Carlos Castillo said.

But after #PresidentTrump was elected to a second term with promises to ramp up #deportations of undocumented immigrants, absences spiked again.

Across five school districts in California’s #CentralValley, student absenteeism rose by an average of 22% in January and February — the first two months of Trump’s new term — compared with the same period during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. The increase was most pronounced among elementary school students.

@joe9739

Get educated on immigration laws.

@daviddavid9837

It is not the government's role or responsibility to provide free public education to illegal immigrants. Or any of the dozens of other programs funded across the country by taxpayer dollars.

@randallhamblen3390

I'm down to pay for American children to get an education, not necessarily a government education, but to Hell with paying for non-citisen individuals!

@DaBinChe

Who else wants to see Newsom resign immediately, gone for good, recalled, never seen again, investigated, prosecuted and imprisoned? !

@Reyd_01

So they're saying people who aren't citizens are now afraid to claim a free education that citizens pay taxes for? Aw dang.

No deportation is the right choice

@danielglover1453

Only in America would someone say something so dumb! Education not deportation. Who pays for these kids to go to school? Oh yeah we do! Why do people believe they have a right to our educational system?

1 day ago | 2

@miker9082

American taxpayers should not be funding the education of non citizens. Thank you, President Trump.

I don’t know what’s so hard about this…. No one is against immigration. We like immigration. We just want the people that are coming here to respect the people that are from here. That’s is. By going around immigration law is disrespectful not only to the people that are native to this country, but those people who followed the rules when they came here. What is so difficult about this? I don’t get it….

Absentee them out of the country

@spawnandbatman6975

Maybe they should learn what the laws are right?

@lovesgucci1

I’m sorry but how is that a bad thing? Our schools classrooms are already overcrowded, more ESL classes and less extracurricular activities due to funding for migrant children. I’m all for helping people but not at the expense of American children and families in desperate needs themselves.
