Serial Killers Documentaries

Is it just me, or are the red arrows in the thumbnails a thing of the past?

A while ago I clicked "do not recommend channel" on every video in my feed (with a few exceptions where it made sense) that contained arrows, red circles circling nothing in the image, and clickbait things like this. Also did the same with titles like "And then THIS happened", and videos where the title is a question. (Like "Is this the Rolex killer?" and translates into "No, it's not, it's a mediocre watch but I bought it for cheap or some friend gave it to me for a few hours and wanted to make a new video")

I don't know if the algorithm has something to do with it and stopped showing me videos like that, or people just decided that these practices don't work too well on YouTube anymore. Do you still get those?

P.S.: The creators didn't fix the "In this video..." showing snippets of the best part in the first few seconds to hook you. I basically look for that part and skip the whole video to get there and I'm done in like 40 seconds :)

@WhosThere26

Don’t forget the “the LAST one is the best!” Or “the last one 😂”. I hate manipulative behavior

I don't know if the algorithm has changed but I'm getting loads of small/ low view videos recommended all of a sudden 🤷‍♂

"With the most insane twist" is another.

@cygnia

it keeps recommending me AI narrated channels!

@TheClanDad

YouTube Shorts are my new nemesis. “Do not recommend this channel” should have a “Or anything else remotely likely to have Joe Rogan in it” option. 😉

@MtnGirll

The algorithm hates me because it can’t figure me out. It throws entirely different stuff at me every day. 😂

@Arckivio

I hate the "& then this happened" video's too but there's also the "no one told you " or "they don't want you to know this". Translates as no one told me because it's not worth knowing!!!!

i just had to go into my history and reset it all as i too was getting incredibly narrow suggestions and not being shown A LOT of content. it’s really frustrating

Clickbait is super annoying. The remedy I took was to only watch channels that I am subscribed to and the channels of those who my subscribed channels highly recommend.

If you browse the homepage not signed in you'll see what others see. It's still quite awful what people are clicking.

I'm getting a lot of weird foreign "Watch me try on see through lingerie" and other crap. Do not recommend seems to make it worse.

Separately, one thing that I’ve been pleased to notice is that over the past couple years, videos with narrated content are getting much longer. Whether YouTube’s monetary return to its bonafide creators has spawned this resurgence, the incentive for creators to invest more time + capital into the content they produce + provide to their audience has not gone unnoticed. At last, it has been acknowledged in this 21st C. that we are not all plagued by deficits in our abilities to stay on topic + maintain healthy attention spans. Regardless, I’m grateful there is a new impetus for creating hour-plus-long productions for the YouTube audience. This enhanced, more fully researched content has not gone unnoticed for those of us in search of understanding as much of the “complete story,” fulfilled by uncovering all of its specifics. For truth is stranger than fiction +, crime-based or not, the nuances of the events of the past have made + will continue to make an impact on each of our own current cultural, social, + material landscapes, each of which are forever, collectively evolving.

From an artistic standpoint — + you are indeed an artist with immense ingenuity, among more than just one artistic medium — + from an Architectural Historian-turned-English Arts Teacher, my visual memory is recalling things I’ve watched most recently + I think you may be on to something… It’s about time too. I agree that those prototypical YouTube thumbnails are / were inherently + consistently obnoxious, each akin to the plethora of the since canceled Buzzfeed advertisement-esque x make-believe scientific study x business savvy, promising life-hack-revealing thumbnails. Each of which, once clicked upon, often brought the audience little to no satisfaction or new revelations upon completion of their viewing. As wordy + long-winded as I may be personally within the artistic spheres in which I create my own material, there are times I do catch myself stopping, reflecting, + reminding myself that more often than not, minimalism can often overtly + particularly, as implied, covertly draw much more appeal + therefore a more substantive, impactful reveal upon viewing.

I do feel the algorithm changes are odd. Sometimes it feels the shifts are tiny, then once in a while it starts throwing all sorts of weird things my way. I also do take actions like you describe to force the algorithm to stop offering videos I find annoying. Click bait used to mildly irk me, now I get genuinely annoyed. Also annoying, the number of ads inserted in certain content providers videos. Within annoying ads, the ones I can’t hit skip fast enough are “watch this quickly before drug companies take it down” or “one simple thing to drop 40 pounds in a month”…. WHO watches these ads ? Who?

@Scorpio45Libra

Don't forget the clickbait thumbnails that say "We're saying goodbye...."🙄

@AntonSlavik

Don't ask me bro, that sh*t was old as soon as I saw it. However, some self-important science YouTuber was complaining about "AI" generated science content, and a lot of its thumbnails have meaningless circles and arrows. So not completely dead.

@MagdaleneDivine

I just filled out a survey and I for one specific said I get no exposure. But me personally I'm ok with it. But Yeah they're trying to be inclusive and shit and stop favoring the huge subscribers count. But I understand why my channel is doing stupid. Cause I'm bad at making them. Like I put no effort into it. And reading that comment about being suggested small view count channel is nerve wracking

@Ms.HarmonyJ

I hope you are doing well, my brother. Have you decided to stop making SKD videos completely now? If so, that's understandable as you may be tired and burnt out. I just wanted to let you know that I am open to trying new things on your channel, no matter what direction you choose to take.
