I recently had a conversation with a friend, and our discussion highlighted the risks associated with widespread AI integration, especially for children who have not yet developed basic skills such as critical thinking, creativity, the ability to read a bookโs chapter and summarize it, and many others, all without AI.
But this risk is not limited to kids; it applies to adults as well. You might have seen the recently published MIT study, where researchers used EEG scans to observe subjects composing essays. One group wrote using only their minds, a second used a search engine, and a third used ChatGPT.
The results were shocking.
The users of ChatGPT had poorer neural interconnection and diminished overall intellectual investment. They were less able to remember what they produced and had a reduced sense of ownership of their creations. The investigators called this effect "cognitive debt."
This is not to say that AI is โrotting our brains,โ but rather that ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ ๐ช๐จ๐ ๐๐ฉ ๐ข๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐จ. When we copy and paste, we are not learning, innovating, or doing meaningful work.
๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ธ๐ถ๐ฑ๐, they first need to learn these foundational skills without ChatGPT or AI. Then, we can teach them how to use AI as a multiplier of the knowledge and skills they already have.
๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐, we need to stop using ChatGPT or AI unnecessarily. Use AI responsibly. Ask yourself: Do I feel a genuine sense of fulfillment or satisfaction with the AI-generated output for this task? If the answer is no, it likely means you're not contributing enough of your own human input, what I call the human input quotient.
Letโs step up as humans and embrace what I call ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ (๐๐ฆ๐ฅ), which means using AI responsibly.
