When I was in middle school in Mexico my city transformed under the threat of organized crime. It happened in literally one day, there was gun fight between police and the criminals, and that heralded the change. Afterwards there was a wave of kidnappings. People would be taken off the street by masked people, and held for ransom. Most were never released. It happened to people I knew
What I remember most is the fear. It's odd to live in a society were everyone is afraid. The fear tints every moment of your life, it never goes away, how could it? Anyone could be captured at any time
Eventually we did overcome this. My city became safe enough that to this day we get refugees from other cities that haven't been able to overcome this challenge
