Still won't be getting one in the future. The recent thing they just did was to disable hardware encoding

The fact they thought they could do it,is why no one will buy in future. The fact they are willing to make such a hostile move and are forced to back down will make other Nas companies think twice before they try something similar. I wanted this for a home cloud. Not anymore

Because of their earlier decision, many people have discovered more affordable and open solutions that does everything their products do.

IDGAF. If they did it once, they can, and probably are going to try to do this again I am not buying anything for them

My sincere opinion...if at 1st you don't succeed try again until you do. I would avoid this brand for sure.

Too late. I already went with Ugreen because they did that. The thing is..... I couldn't even fathom why someone would try to restrict storage to be proprietary. Especially for someone that even knows what a NAS is

If they cant reverse the policy on older 25 devices the owners should return them under warranty?

Older devices are still locked down? Mine isn’t

They stopped this because they got their ass handed to them by UGREEN. Too little too late in my eyes. They have shown their face. I won't be recommending them and if I hear a friend wants to buy one, I'll encourage him to reconsider.

VICTORY: Synology just backed down on their restrictive drive policy!
After massive community backlash, Synology will now allow non-verified third-party drives on 2025 Plus, Value, and J-series NAS models with DSM 7.3. Some backstory: Synology wanted enterprise margins on prosumer gear, so they locked NAS devices to "validated" drives and spammed DANGER warnings if you used standard drives.
But there's a catch: This only affects NEW 2025 models. Older devices are still locked down, and enterprise xs+ models keep the restrictions.
Keep that energy. Consumer pressure works 🔥
